Beginning of the Semester Journal Entry

I really don’t have that much experience when it comes to technology at all; let alone apply it to the educational field. I’ve been puzzling over what to make as my lesson plan that has been assigned, because all I think about when “technology” comes up are things like: Word Doc, PowerPoint, Videos and Blogs. Other than that, my imagination kind of freezes like an old dial-up computer (yes I used a very corny joke to apply that).

My goals for this course are to make the above more considerable to where our society is headed. Technology is changing every year, and probably more often than that – consider how many new phones are thrown at us. When I was in elementary school, we had maybe 2 or 3 computers in our classrooms. Last year I taught at two different elementary schools, and both used SmartBoards. I’ve never seen those before I started my practicum, and the students thought that was funny. Needless to say, I almost felt old because I was so out-dated with technology. From observing how the SmartBoards are used, I definitely can see how technology is evolving the way education is taught these days. I want to learn more about how I can apply my lesson plans in a better way to the students; via technology standards. I’m sure my view is very limited right now, and I hope the class will change that.

My “burning” question is; how will the uses of technology will affect the ‘old’ teaching styles –such as handwriting and teaching the students how to write? During the year I spent in a country that is far more technically advanced than we are, the schools still used old stove to heat the school, and there were still chalkboards. The school I attended was very wealthy, so it wasn’t a question of money. I was still able to experience the Japanese culture through their school system; still the original state it was in years and years ago. Will that be lost over time with this developing technology? Will we lose a part of our identity?
